Description
For most of the world`s badgers, humans are the only other animals that pose any real threat to their wellbeing. The practices of digging badgers from their setts and baiting them for hours on end with dogs; these activities were common practices in Britain until relatively recent times.
Sadly, these so-called `sports` still go on today, and badgers are also trapped, hunted and persecuted in other ways for `sport`; for meat, fur and fat; and in the name of `pest control`, in many of the countries in which they occur. When mothers are killed the orphaned cubs have little chance of survival. We humans also put pressure on the world`s badgers in a number of other ways. In some areas they are killed in the name of disease control.
In many places, badger habitat has been destroyed by changes in land use associated with agriculture and development. In places with high road densities and large volumes of road traffic, many badgers are killed by road traffic accidents.
CWI works with Pauline Kidner at the Secret World sanctuary in Somerset to care for orphaned badgers. Cubs lucky enough to be rescued and taken to Pauline receive the very best of care. Bottle fed, even throughout the night, and then weaned onto solids, the cubs are given expert veterinary care whenever needed and lashings of love and attention to prepare them for release into the wild.
